SQL Server 2017 is an important step towards creating a universal SQL Server platform that allows you to freely choose development languages, data types, local or cloud environments and operating systems, providing compatibility with Linux, Docker containers based on Linux and with Windows. This section contains a summary of new features in selected functional areas, as well as links to additional information.

Advantages of Microsoft SQL Server:

    Increasing the efficiency of processing in memory, in which transactions are processed 30 times, and queries - 100 times faster than in disk relational databases and operational intelligence systems in real time
    The new Always Encrypted technology (always encrypted) helps protect data when stored and moved, on local systems and in the cloud, using the primary keys located in the application, without making changes to the application
    The Stretch Database technology (database extension) allows you to keep most of the client log data at hand by moving the OLTP data to Microsoft Azure in a safe way without having to make changes to the application
    The built-in advanced analytics capabilities provide scalability and efficiency in the creation and execution of additional analytical algorithms directly in the main transactional SQL Server database
    Exploring business data by rendering on mobile devices using native applications for Windows, iOS, and Android
    Simplified management of relational and non-relational data using T-SQL queries using PolyBase
    Quick hybrid backups, high availability and disaster recovery scenarios for backing up and restoring local databases in Microsoft Azure, and hosting the AlwaysOn SQL Server replica in Azure

SQL Server 2017 includes many new features, improvements and improvements for the database engine.

    The sp_configure parameter, called clr strict security, is enabled by default to improve the security of the CLR assemblies. See the CLR strict security section. (CTP 2.0)
    The installer now allows you to set the initial size for each tempdb file to 256 GB (262,144 MB). If the file size exceeds 1 GB and the instant initialization of the files is not enabled, a warning is issued. (CTP 2.0)
    The modified_extent_page_count column in sys.dm_db_file_space_usage tracks differences in each database file, allowing you to use intelligent solutions for full or differential backups, based on the percentage of changed database pages. (CTP 2.0)
    The T-SQL SELECT INTO syntax now supports loading the table into a filegroup that is different from the default user group by using the ON keyword. (CTP 2.0)
    Now transactions are maintained between all databases included in the AlwaysOn availability group, including databases that are part of the same instance. See Transactions - Always On Availability Groups and Database Mirroring (CTP 2.0)
    New features for Availability Groups include support for groups without clusters, a minimum number of replicas for commit, migration capabilities between Windows and Linux, and testing on both systems. (CTP 1.3)
    New dynamic administrative views:
        sys.dm_db_log_stats provides a summary of the attributes and information about transaction log files that help you monitor the health of transaction logs. (CTP 2.1)
        sys.dm_tran_version_store_space_usage tracks the use of the version store for each database, which helps to quickly schedule tempdb sizes. (CTP 2.0)
        sys.dm_db_log_info provides information about virtual log files (VLFs) for tracking possible problems with transaction logs, alerting and preventing these problems. (CTP 2.0)
        sys.dm_db_stats_histogram is a new dynamic administrative view for analyzing statistics. (CTP 1.3)
        sys.dm_os_host_info provides information about the operating system for Windows and Linux. (CTP 1.0)
    The Database Tuning Advisor (DTA) tool has additional features and higher performance. (CTP 1.2)
    Improvements in memory include support for computed columns in optimized tables, as well as full support for JSON functions and the CROSS APPLY statement for modules compiled in native code. (CTP 1.1)
    New string functions: CONCAT_WS, TRANSLATE and TRIM, and for function STRING_AGG WITHIN GROUP is now supported. (CTP 1.1)
    New parameters of mass access (BULK INSERT and OPENROWSET (BULK ...)) for CSV files and Azure BLOBs have appeared. (CTP 1.1)
    Improvements to work with optimized objects for memory include sp_spaceused and the elimination of a limit of 8 indices for optimized tables for memory, sp_rename for these tables and for T-SQL modules compiled in native code, and CASE and TOP (N) WITH TIES for compiled in own code modules. Files in the filegroup that are optimized for memory can now be stored, backed up and restored using the Azure storage service. (CTP 1.0)
    DATABASE SCOPED CREDENTIAL - A new class of protected elements that support the CONTROL, ALTER, REFERENCES, TAKE OWNERSHIP, and VIEW DEFINITION permissions. ADMINISTER DATABASE BULK OPERATIONS is now displayed in sys.fn_builtin_permissions. (CTP 1.0)
    The database COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL 140 has been added (CTP 1.0).

    OS: Windows 8, 8.1, 10; Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 ( only x64 ). OS for editions of Web Edition, Enterprise Edition ( only x64 ): Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016. Versions of Windows 7 and Server 2008, 2008 R2 are not supported!
    Hard disk: at least 6 GB of free disk space
    RAM: Express releases 1 GB, all other editions 4 GB and above
    Processor speed: 2.0 GHz and higher
    Processor type: x64 AMD Opteron processor, AMD Athlon 64, Intel Xeon with Intel EM64T support, Intel Pentium IV with EM64T support
